E3 08: Microsoft Press Conference

Well children, its that time of the year again. The E3 Media and Business Summit (formerly known as The Electronic Entertainment Expo) is back for its '08 addition. The first press conference of the summit came from Microsoft, the makers of the XBox 360.

The lineup of games they showed included A Fallout 3 trailer, a live demo of Resident Evil 5, Fable 2, a live demo of Gears of War 2, a new Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts trailer, Infinite Undiscovery, and Star Ocean: the Last Hope, The Last Remnant.

Games that will be available for download via XBox Live include Geometry Wars 2 and Galaga Legions. Along with that came news of a huge refit of the XBox live Dashboard. The new interface is simpler to use, will have Wii like Avatars that allow you to make a digital representation of yourself, change your pants, hair and face, etc.

Also announced for the Live service is Live Party. This allows you to party up with friends, up to 8, to either play games, share photos, or just hang out; and Xbox live Primetime which allows you to play game show style games for... now get this REAL PRIZES! That's right, real prizes like... now get this... money. Very cool.

Also, and a very bold statement, Microsoft has claimed that they will win the console wars and said that they will sell more consoles than Sony will this generation cycle. We'll just have to wait to see.

Guitar Hero World Tour came out with news in this press conference that Metallica will release their new Death Magnetic album on Guitar Hero simultaneously with the actual release of the album, while Rock Band 2 made a similar announcement when they said that Guns 'n Roses Chinese Democracy tracks will be available for the game, as well as the tracks being "forward compatible" so original tracks and DLC from the first game will be playable in the new game.

But maybe the most shocking news from the press conference, and something I didn't see coming, is the announcement that Final Fantasy XIII will be launched for the XBox 360 as well as the PS3. This is huge news because before now, FFXIII was a PS3 Exclusive. This may help XBox's sales in Japan, but we will have to wait and see.

Later today will be EA's press conference, with the Nintendo's and Sony's coming tomorrow afternoon, with other 3rd party developers conference's coming later in the week. When they happen, I'll blog the happenings and the videos here.
