FBI Alarms New 'Storm Worm' Variant

The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a warning today about a new variation of the infamous "Storm Worm" malware. The statement disclosed that e-mails containing a "F.B.I. vs. Facebook" headline should be immediately discarded as they could be a worm trojan.

"The spammers spreading this virus are preying on Internet users and making their computers an unwitting part of criminal botnet activity," according to the issued statement. The Bureau added that everyone should be encouraged to become "web" savvy as it should prevent any further damages to your home networks and hardware.

The "Storm" worm obtained its alias from its first net infestation during a heavy storm in Northern Europe last year. Since then, it has been using social and political names on its headlines to entice users.

Facebook 'Scrabble' Down Due to Hack

Electronic Arts, which handles digital versions of the board game Scrabble for North American parent company Hasbro, has claimed that malicious hackers were responsible for the disappearance of its Facebook application on Tuesday.

The game had crashed on the same day that the creators of Scrabulous, a popular imitation game, blocked access to North American visitors after a legal complaint from Hasbro. With the real Scrabble inaccessible, irritated fans assumed that there was a server problem--the game is in beta, after all--and filled the application's discussion wall with angry comments.

But the real problem, EA has said, is that a hack downed Scrabble. When, according to the Los Angeles Times, the game was still inaccessible at 4 p.m. PT, the company released a statement.

"EA's Scrabble Facebook game experienced a malicious attack this morning, resulting in the disabling of Scrabble on Facebook," the statement read. "We're working with our partners to resolve this issue and have Scrabble back online and ready to play as soon as possible."

'Twitter' And Texts Better In Emergency?

Yesterday in the greater Los Angeles area, the earth shook. But in the midst of a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, a woman by the name of Verdell Wilson acted immediately during her gynecologist exam in the LA office - she twittered.

"As soon as I got dressed, I twittered my experience from my cell phone," Wilson said. Due to the abundance of calls during emergencies, CNET reported that twittering or texting may be the best way to communicate. AT&T spokesman John Britton said that the "texting network" won't be as congested as getting a phone call through.

So next time during an emergency, remember, texts are faster than voices....

'Scrabulous' Disappears from Facebook After Hasbro Suit

"Facebook users in the U.S. and Canada can no longer access Scrabulous, the faux-Scrabble game that quickly became one of the most popular applications on its developer platform.

This was done independently on behalf of the Scrabulous creators, a Facebook representative told CNET News.com in an e-mail Tuesday. "In response to a legal request from Hasbro, the copyright and trademark holder for Scrabble in the U.S. and Canada, the developers of Scrabulous have suspended their application in the U.S. and Canada until further notice," the e-mail explained.

The game's disappearance comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed last week by Hasbro, the game manufacturer that owns the rights to Scrabble in the United States and Canada. In the suit, Hasbro named as defendants the creators of Scrabulous -- India-based brothers Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, and their company, RJ Softwares. The suit asked Facebook to pull the game, citing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and asked the Agarwallas to close their Scrabulous.com site."

WWE RAW Results - 7/28

After weeks spent leaderless and awash in mayhem and disarray, Raw finally has a new General Manager: Mike Adamle.

At the top of Monday night’s show, Shane McMahon announced that he and Executive Vice President Stephanie McMahon had selected a new GM, but that he wouldn’t be announced until later that night. Raw’s final moments were shocking ones, as Shane introduced new GM Adamle, known to most of the WWE Universe as the typically dunder-headed ECW commentator. In spite of that perception, however, Adamle made his presence felt during his first night on Raw, making numerous matches over the course of the night.

One of the matches made by Adamle was the night’s main event, a tag team match pitting John Cena & Batista against JBL & Kane. Though they began the show in an argument over who should face World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk at SummerSlam, Cena & Batista were able to work together in their match to defeat JBL & Kane. After their victory, however, the new Raw GM made sure that the two Superstars’ partnership wouldn’t be a lasting one, as Adamle announced Raw’s first epic match for SummerSlam: John Cena vs. Batista for the first time ever.

Flowing out of their confrontation on last week’s Raw, World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase were set to defend their titles against Jerry “The King” Lawler & Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Before the match could begin, however, ring announcer Lillian Garcia was alerted that the new General Manager had changed the match, substituting Duggan for a very confused Michael Cole. Lawler’s experience ended up being no match for the ambition and vitality of the World Tag Team Champions, who won by pinning a defenseless Cole

'Rock Band' Gets Expensive for Australia

According to the folks at Kotaku, employees at some of the bigger retail stores in Australia are saying that Aussies are going to be stuck with a fat bill if they're interested in getting the full Rock Band experience. The US bundle, which includes a mic, guitar, drums, and the game is going to run state-siders $160. But down under, they're going to get reemed as the game is not bundled to anything and the peripherals are mostly sold separately. So, let's do some math, shall we?

Australian prices converted to US dollars.
The Game = $114
One Guitar = $105
Drums = $152
Microphone = $TBA
"Hardware Kit" (Drums, Mic, and One Guitar) = $275

So, the cheapest way to go is the Hardware Kit and the game which will run Aussies $389, but that's not even the full experience if you want two guitars.

'Guitar Hero World Tour' Setlist Leak?

The interwebz are buzzing with news that the Guitar Hero World Tour complete setlist may have leaked. Keep in mind, no one has any way of knowing this information is correct, but it seems plausible, and even likely, given what we know of tracks that have been rumored for awhile.

Nintendo Controllers Could Face Ban

After losing a patent infringement case this recent May filed by Texas-based company Anascape in 2006, Nintendo's signature controllers could face a potential ban, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The following controllers are facing a potential halt in sales: Wii Classic Controller, Wii Nunchuk, GameCube controller, and GameCube Wavebird wireless controller. Nintendo requested another trial last week, but a Texas judge denied it. If the ban was to be issued, it wouldn't be in effect until an appeal by Nintendo on the original ruling was resolved. Bloomberg also reports that Nintendo could evade the ban by posting a bond into an escrow account.

In the original suit, Anascape stated that Nintendo violated their company's several technology patents that include vibration feedback, analog sensors and more controller applicable functions. Anascape also sued Microsoft with the same charges. Nintendo was ordered to give a $21 million fine after losing the case in May.

LOST at Comic Con 2008

"On Saturday at the San Diego Comic-Con, a huge crowd of Lost fans was treated to a Q&A session with the famous team of Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, several knick-knacks, a few pieces of scoop and one big surprise.

The main draw for any Lost diehard, of course, is the vague promise of scoop. As far as new intel goes, it was typically scarce. The execs revealed that Jin (who last was seen on the exploding freighter) and Locke (reclined in a coffin under the purview of FutureJack as the season finale faded to black) each would be back in some capacity, and that "dead is a relative term" on this show. Also, animal lovers may be pleased to know that Vincent is not only alive and well, but will make it to the end of the series!

To wrap things up, a fan came out on stage with a video camera screaming that he had "exclusive video from the Dharma booth." It was shot Blair Witch-style, and was clearly a planned part of the panel, yet the footage still was hilarious. As the tape unspooled, the scientist from the Dharma orientation films hinted that the island is 30 years behind. (The hatch music from the '70s now makes a bit more sense.) He begged anyone watching to reconstitute the Dharma Initiative, because all of the original doctors are dead. Say what?!" — Erin Fox

Doctor Who is finally on iTunes (America)!!!

The revival of the long-dormant Doctor Who serials have finally been released on iTunes for those of us on the left side of The Pond. It's not your father's Doctor Who as Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant take on the role(s) of the time-travelling Time Lord, the Doctor. I suggest you finally catch up on these episodes and enjoy the sheer brilliance that is David Tennant. If you can't afford the three series available (sadly four isn't up yet, which is quite possibly my fave), may I recommend purchasing series two. While there is a sort of continuing story between series, you'll be able to understand what is going on up to that point. Not only is David Tennant in it, but Billie Piper plays Rose Tyler, the Doctor's fun Companion and heart-breaking love interest. One of the best Doctor Who series of ALL-TIME! No doubt.

Give it a chance and enjoy the fun!

Stephen King haunts the small(er) screen

Starting Monday, July 28, mobile phone users & web surfers can enjoy Stephen King's latest work in a ground-breaking series of 25 original video episodes.

The series of video episodes were created through a unique partnership between Scribner and Simon & Schuster Digital, Marvel Entertainment, and CBS Mobile, and is believed to be the first comic-style book adaptation specifically developed and published for viewing on multiple small screen platforms.
Starting today, viewers can go to www.NisHere.com or www.simonsays.com to see a preview of the episodes, which will also be unveiled at Comic-Con International in San Diego today at a panel event featuring the creators of this pioneering venture.

Beginning Monday, July 28 and running through Friday, August 29 the video episodes (each running approximately two minutes), will be released in serial fashion on consecutive weekdays for five weeks, at no additional charge to mobile users, through the largest mobile carriers. Must See Movie!

If you like Horror movies, and you like to laugh your ass off, then you HAVE to see Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. It's a teen slasher film told from the perspective of a documentary crew filming a serial killer as he prepares for and executes his murders.

The performances of Nathan Baesel and Robert Englund are amazing, and the insight into the life of a serial killer is simply brilliant.

My favorite quote from the film ...

Leslie Vernon : "You have no idea how much cardio I have to do. It's ridiculous. There's that whole thing of making it look like you're walking when everyone else is running their asses off."

Wii-Mote Blood Pressure Check Add-On

That's right, Nintendo filed a patent for a Wii-Mote blood pressure check add-on. According to Spong's report, the add-on will allow the following functions and features:

"Pulse and body temperature of a user playing a video game on the video game console, and a rotation counter for counting the number of rotations of the main body; a control unit mounted in the recess; a band including two second measurement devices for measuring blood pressure and pulse respectively by wrapping the band around the wrist; and a cable interconnecting the main body and the band. Blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature values are shown the display while playing."

Availability and release information of the add-on is not disclosed as of yet, but at least now, the next Gramma visits, let her know that she can soon play Wii Tennis with you without any worry.

What. The. Fuck.

Spong: Now the Wii wants your blood pressure

Cheering is compulsory in China

In schools and on television, China is teaching the "Olympic 4-step" to ensure that the home crowd is enthusiastic yet orderly.

The cheer is a joint product of the Party Office of Spiritual Civilization Development and Guidance (GODPP), the Ministry of Education, BOCOG, and CCTV. Here's an illustrated guide, which will appear on television and promotional posters in the near future:

The Beijing News also reports that students across the country will be trained in the cheer, particularly the 800,000 students who will watch the games on-site. In addition, 448 volunteers will lead spectators in the cheer at both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Li Ning, president of the Beijing Etiquette Institute, described how the cheer can be adapted to different contexts. The cheer can contain a multitude of variations. It could be "Go Olympics! Go China!" as well as "Go China! Go Yao Ming!" or "Go Brazil! Go Ronaldino!" It will work to give encouragement to every country and athlete in competition.

Seriously, this seems a little staged to me. What do you all think?

A Track Harder Than "Through The Fire and Flames"???

Is it possible "Young Man Blues" by the Who on expert drums on Rock Band is a harder track than DragonForce's "Through The Fire and Flames" on expert guitar in Guitar Hero III? Take a look for yourself and decide.

EA, Take-Two Acquisition Deadline Extended

Electronic Arts has once again extended its deadline to acquire Take-Two Interactive, persuading the Take-Two stockholders to tender shares at $25.74. EA's former deadline was last week, July 18 (a day after E3), but now, they have decided that T2 has until August 18.

But it looks like EA is being elusive in the whole "take-over every company" scenario, as their press statement reads that the extension is simply for the FTC to continue their investigation about their offer: "Extending the tender offer allows the FTC review process to continue. The proposed transaction is still subject to certain conditions that include regulatory approval. EA retains the right to terminate the offer if the conditions are not satisfied."

Even though Take-Two's stock ($25.04 per) is currently below EA's offer, the company still distances itself away from the third-party software giant, stating that there are "multiple" parties interested: "We are fully engaged in a formal process to evaluate strategic alternatives that have the potential to deliver greater value than EA's inadequate offer. As part of this process, we continue to engage in meaningful discussions with multiple parties, a number of whom have been conducting due diligence."

400 Dead Penguins Wash Ashore on Beaches

More than 400 penguins, most of them young, have been found dead on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro state over the past two months, according to Eduardo Pimenta, superintendent for the state coastal protection and environment agency in the resort city of Cabo Frio.

Rescuers and those who treat penguins are divided over the possible causes.

Thiago Muniz, a veterinarian at the Niteroi Zoo, said he believed overfishing has forced the penguins to swim further from shore to find fish to eat "and that leaves them more vulnerable to getting caught up in the strong ocean currents."

But biologist Erli Costa of Rio de Janeiro's Federal University suggested global warming could be involved.

"I don't think the levels of pollution are high enough to affect the birds so quickly. I think instead we're seeing more young and sick penguins because of global warming, which affects ocean currents and creates more cyclones, making the seas rougher," Costa said.

I saw this near the top of of the most viewed chart on YouTube today, which shocked me, but then I realized its also featured by YouTube. E3 08: Sony Press Conference

Sony, the makers of the PS3, also had their turn at the conference floor today at E3. Jack Tretton started it off by giving a short history behind Sony and its Playstation platform. He also explained how Folding at Home has allowed world record research to be performed by scientists searching for treatments to disease.

The intro video showed Resident Evil 5, Bioshock, and NBA 09. Resistance 2 was shown with what seemed to be actual gameplay footage. Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price then told the back story to the game and showed a new trailer for the game. The game will also have 8-player Online Co-Op and 60-Player, that's right 60-Player, Competitive multiplayer modes.

Tretton then went back on the stage and shows off some of the character customization in LittleBigPlanet and uses the game in a really cool way to show off Sony's business stats, which included the sales of 1.8 million PS3's, 1.6 million PSP's, and 1.5 million PS2's. Also announced was a lineup of Greatest Hits titles that will sell for $29.99, and they include Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, and Assassin's Creed.

New PS2 titles (yeah, apparently its still around) were given which included, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and Mercenaries 2. Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty was announced for purchase over the PlayStation Network for $14.99. other PSN titles included Crash Commando, PAIN Amusement Park, Flower, Siren: Blood Curse, and Rag Doll Kung-Fu: Fists of Plastic. Tretton then talked about PlayStation Home and he said that everyone's patience will be greatly rewarded... yet again no date for Home was given.

PSP titles that were shown included Resistance: Retribution, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Madden 09, Loco Roco 2, Super Stardust Portable, Lego Batman, Patapon 2, Buzz Master Quiz, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Then a very short teaser trailer of God of War III was shown but maybe the biggest surprise was MAG, a game that will feature multiplayer campaigns of up to 256 players. that's right... 256 players!!! The teams can be broken down into squads of 8 players each and will also have paratrooping and helicopter insertions.

E3 08: Nintendo Press Conference

Nintendo has it's turn at E3 this afternoon with their press conference earlier this afternoon at The Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The opening video showed families, parents, kids, basically gamers of all ages playing the Wii and DS. And then... and I don't know what the hell this was about, it kinda put me to sleep but a woman named Cammie Dunaway took the stage. She told stories about her kid, and yada, yada, yada. "As a Mom, it helps to be at a company like Nintendo," Dunaway says. Again I almost fell asleep.

Then Nintendo got down to business and began showing off games by having Shaun White demo Shaun White Snowboarding with the Wii Balance Board. Also announced was Animal Crossing City Folk. And then Reggie Fils-Aime (more commonly knows as just Reggie) took the stage and said that by the end of this year, DS sales will grow to almost 100 million systems and that the Wii will become the best-selling console in America this generation cycle. He then announces for the Wii Star Wars Clone Wars, Raymann's Raving Rabbids TV Party, And Call of Duty: World at War. Announced for the DS were Guitar Hero On Tour Decades, Spore: The DS, Pokemon Ranger, and Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars.

Maybe the most interesting thing seen at the press conference was the introduction of Wii Motion Plus. It's a Wii-Mote add-on that increases the sensitivity and accuracy of the Wii-Mote. Reggie said it's "one-to-one motion control". Wii Sports Resort was announced and it comes bundled with a Wii Motion Plus. Then Mr. Miyamoto came on stage to show off Wii Music.

E3 08: Electronic Arts (EA) Press Conference

EA came out today with their E3 press conference and, though it started a little late, people were greeted with a lot of new titles they are planing on revealing in the next year.

The conference began with a huge video compilation of all the usual titles, Madden, NBA LIVE, The Sims, Skate It, Spore, and The Mirror's Edge. Also shown off were the titles Sim Animals, Sims 3, Dead Space, A Mirror's Edge demo was shown, NBA 09 Live, Tiger Woods 09 Was live on stage, Dragon Age: Origin, and Left 4 Dead.

Another announcement is that EA is going to Partner with id software for a new game called Rage. Although cameras were not allowed to capture the video that was shown.... why do they tease us!!!!

E3 08: Microsoft Press Conference

Well children, its that time of the year again. The E3 Media and Business Summit (formerly known as The Electronic Entertainment Expo) is back for its '08 addition. The first press conference of the summit came from Microsoft, the makers of the XBox 360.

The lineup of games they showed included A Fallout 3 trailer, a live demo of Resident Evil 5, Fable 2, a live demo of Gears of War 2, a new Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts trailer, Infinite Undiscovery, and Star Ocean: the Last Hope, The Last Remnant.

Games that will be available for download via XBox Live include Geometry Wars 2 and Galaga Legions. Along with that came news of a huge refit of the XBox live Dashboard. The new interface is simpler to use, will have Wii like Avatars that allow you to make a digital representation of yourself, change your pants, hair and face, etc.

Also announced for the Live service is Live Party. This allows you to party up with friends, up to 8, to either play games, share photos, or just hang out; and Xbox live Primetime which allows you to play game show style games for... now get this REAL PRIZES! That's right, real prizes like... now get this... money. Very cool.

Also, and a very bold statement, Microsoft has claimed that they will win the console wars and said that they will sell more consoles than Sony will this generation cycle. We'll just have to wait to see.

Guitar Hero World Tour came out with news in this press conference that Metallica will release their new Death Magnetic album on Guitar Hero simultaneously with the actual release of the album, while Rock Band 2 made a similar announcement when they said that Guns 'n Roses Chinese Democracy tracks will be available for the game, as well as the tracks being "forward compatible" so original tracks and DLC from the first game will be playable in the new game.

But maybe the most shocking news from the press conference, and something I didn't see coming, is the announcement that Final Fantasy XIII will be launched for the XBox 360 as well as the PS3. This is huge news because before now, FFXIII was a PS3 Exclusive. This may help XBox's sales in Japan, but we will have to wait and see.

Later today will be EA's press conference, with the Nintendo's and Sony's coming tomorrow afternoon, with other 3rd party developers conference's coming later in the week. When they happen, I'll blog the happenings and the videos here.

Belarus Calls For Beheading Of John McCain

About a zero percent chance this photo actually has anything to do with McCain

If you have been following the 24-hour presidential election news cycle, one of the random useless non-story stories that has emerged in the past week is that John McCain's economic advisor Phil Gramm (former South Carolina senator, with a Ph.D. in economics) made public comments last week that he felt the United States economy is not really that bad. The real problem, he opines, is that we've become a "nation of whiners". Who cares what the basis for the statement is -- the grist for the news mill is "McCain's advisor called us all WHINERS!!!!11" I wonder if Gramm ever pumps his own gas? Of course, when Sen. Gramm was a university professor, he could probably say whatever shit he liked and got away with it.

Anyhow, John McCain was forced to respond to this OUTRAGE:

Yes, the key punishment: "I think Senator Gramm would be in serious consideration for ambassador to Belarus. Though I'm not sure the citizens of Minsk would welcome that."

Forget waterboarding, Phil - you're going to MINSK!

WTF?! Why is McCain raggin' on Belarus? Miss South Carolina is surely confused. And this is kind of a blow to Karen Stewart, the career government employee whose pinnacle life accomplishment was being appointed the U.S. ambassador to Belarus in 2006.

I tried to find some Belarus-based newspaper or blogger commenting on this great slight to their national pride, but came up short. (My research, however, did unearth a short youtube video with two belorussian students visiting America. Their favorite thing about America? Avril Lavigne. Who is from Canada.)

So, the picture above is from the front page of a Belarus newspaper, and I figured it was safe to assume it was from a protest being held against McCain. Oh, the humanity!

Hello & Welcome!!!

Welcome to The Nerd Corner! (I use the term 'nerd' with the utmost admiration)
So I've had this idea for quite some time now and have talked about it with a couple community members, and we've decided to finally follow through with it. Through conversation in IRC, private messages, e-mails, etc.- I, and many of you probably, have noticed that most of us share common interests that live outside of our ARG-vlog-web series interest-sphere. Most of us share the same taste in music (as seen from our DJs and listeners at BreeFM), same taste in movies, same taste in literature, same taste in television shows, basically the same tastes in about everything. So why not have a site where you can read a friend's review on a certain movie, or hear about the latest concert that a buddy attended, or get alerted on a cool new book that no one has ever heard about?
We are going to start off with a very small group of bloggers, that you all know and love, to pave the way for the future of this blog. We will stumble our way around each other until we all wind up in sync, and you'll think that we're all working from the same office. Over time we'll invite more bloggers to join us, and then, similar to LG15Today, we'll welcome anyone who wishes to join the team. Speaking of which, in no way is this blog looking to replace or be an alternative to your favorite blogs, such as LG15Today. Rather this blog is intended to be a supplemental and to further tie the community closer together.
And now here's my favorite part- the part where I piss some people off. :) I will take full responsibility for this decision, so if you have a problem with it... tough. I am a firm believer in free & equal speech. However, sometimes certain people will exercise their freedom of speech more boisterously and more often that it often drowns out others' speech. There are also people that exist, and this community is no exception, only to further their own personal agenda; whether that means whoring out their own little projects or sucking up to people they think will make them famous/money. So in the interest of fairness, NO ONE that is currently employed (or actively seeking employment, or falsely claimed to have been employed) by a company that profits from online videos will be permitted to join this blog's staff anytime soon. Likewise, if you are currently a PM (puppet master) of an active ARG, or if you are currently producing your own online web series, you will not be asked to join this blog's staff in the immediate future. I'm sorry but we're not looking for someone who will constantly just promote themselves and contribute nothing else to the site. In order to be fair and unbiased, I've decided to currently (time may change this rule) apply this to everyone producing their own series/ARG (this will not apply to people who have a character that exists within a series or make the occassional fan fic video).
NOTE: If you're about to point out that this is a total hindrance of free & equal speech- wow... congratulations... you're a genius. Go buy yourself a cookie.
So with all of that out of the way, WELCOME AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY WHAT'S TO COME!
